Water First, Coffee Second: A Tiny Morning Habit With an Outsized Payoff

Most of us wake up mildly dehydrated after seven or eight hours without fluids, then reach straight for coffee — which does little to rehydrate us. A simpler first move is a full glass of water before anything else.

Why it helps: even mild dehydration can be mistaken for hunger and can leave you feeling foggy and low on energy. Front-loading water supports normal energy levels and can take the edge off morning cravings, making it easier to make calmer food choices later.

The habit that sticks is the boring one: keep a glass by the sink or a bottle on the nightstand, and drink it before your feet are fully under you. No app, no rules — just water, first.

This article is general information, not medical advice. Hydration needs vary; talk to your doctor if you have a condition that affects fluid intake.
